Sutrue uses Concept Laser metal 3D printing in device for keyhole surgery

Using Concept Laser Mlab cusing technology specialist developers at Sutrue, a cardiovascular device design company, have 3D printed a tool to be used in heart operations. The automated suturing device helps surgeons to stitch together tissue after an operation – a process that has remained largely unchanged since the 1st century BC.

The 3D printer is installed in the Microgravity Science Glovebox on the International Space Station

History was made on November 24th at 9:28pm GMT, when the first 3D printer built to operate in space successfully manufactured its first part on the International Space Station (ISS). This is the first time that hardware has been additively manufactured in space, as opposed to launching it from Earth.

The aerospace industry has been searching for methods for 3D printing with metals, however it's something yet too far. The Mold3d technology comes to circumvent this problem by transforming printed plastic parts into injected metal parts ready for use, without any decrease in resolution and quality.

Airbus Defence and Space Cuts Production Time for Satellite Parts with Additive Manufacturing

The robust titanium brackets were manufactured using an EOSINT M 280 Additive Manufacturing system. They easily and permanently withstand the high temperatures and external forces in space (Source: Airbus Defence and Space)The latest generation of satellites from Airbus Defence and Space contain special clamps that join the body of the satellite to the feed and sub-reflector assembly at the top end. Clamps manufactured by conventional production methods did not meet the expectations of the Spanish corporate division. The engineers thus chose the additive-metal-manufacturing technique from EOS for production. This process, where metal powder coats are fused by laser, also allowed an easy adaptation of the component's design.
